     Alzheimer's is fast becoming the most feared condition of our generation.  In the time it takes you to read this article, two people will be told they have Alzheimer's disease.  The Alzheimer's Association estimates that someone is diagnosed every 70 seconds.  Alzheimer's affects one in three people, a calculation that does not include the disease's ripple effect that hits children, grandchildren, friends, and communities.

     So far, modern medicine can do little to treat the condition, making prevention paramount.  That's why scientists are so excited about a groundbreaking new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in January 2014.  This incredible study revealed that vitamin E might be able to slow the progression of Alzheimer's.

An Ounce of Prevention Outperforms Common Alzheimer's Drug

The JAMA study focused on 561 patients diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer's.  For this double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, randomized clinical trial, participants were divided into four groups.

     One group took 2,000 IUs of alpha tocopherol (vitamin E) daily, one took 20 mg of memantine (a popular Alzheimer's drug), one took a combination of vitamin E and memantine, and the last took a placebo.  Researchers tracked the clinical progression of Alzheimer's in each group for slightly over two years.

     At the study's conclusion, they found the disease developed 19% slower per year in the group taking vitamin E than in the group taking the placebo.  The delay translated to over six months of slowed progression over the two-year period.  The group taking vitamin E also required the most minimal increase in caregiver time.

     There has yet to be any indication that vitamin E can prevent the disease, however, it does seem to help patients to remain independent for longer.

The ABGs of Vitamin E

When the media or even general practitioners respond to research like the JAMA study, they often overlook a central consideration: the type of vitamin E used for the trail.  The term "vitamin E" refers to a family of at least eight different fat-soluble antioxidant compounds.  The compounds are divded into two subfamilies, tocopherols (considered to be "true" vitamin E) and tocotrienols, each of which contains four different forms...

      Alpha-
      Beta-
      Gamma-
      Delta-

     Now that you've learned the A, B, G, and D of vitamin E, there's one last distinction to remember—natural versus synthetic.

Why Natural is Better

Your body reacts differently to natural and synthetic vitamins.  Several studies demonstrate that natural vitamin E can be two to three times more bioactive than the same amount of synthetic vitamin E.  Most commercially available vitamin E is synthetic and essentially useless to those seeking to reap maximum health benefits.

Research Proves That Stretching Enhances Strength, Performance, and Endurance

One important study found that a specific stretching program enhanced performance, making people stronger and increasing their endurance.

     "Stretching appears to do more than just increase range of motion," says study author Arnold Nelson, associate professor of kinesiology at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.  "Some people had fantastic improvements."

     Nelson believes stretching affects muscles in a similar way as strength training.  "We suspect it's activating some of the same things in the cell that (strength) exercise activates," he says.

More Proof on the Power of Stretching Boosts Fitness

Exercise physiologist Michael Bracko, spokesperson for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), reported results from a different study that involved 38 mostly sedentary people divided in 2 groups.

     One group did no stretching exercises during a 10-week period while the other group performed specific stretches a few times each week.

     The group that stretched became measurably more flexible—which of course the researchers expected.  But what happened next was a surprise.

     The group that did the stretching also dramatically increased their strength by objective standard measures on weight machines.

  • The amount of weight they could lift one time—their "one-repetition maximum"—increased an average of 32% for knee extension exercises and 15% for knee flexion exercises.
  • Their muscular endurance—defined as the number of repetitions they could do at a 60% of their maximum weight—improved 29% for knee extension and 30% for knee flexion.
  • Shockingly, even their jumping ability improved.  Their vertical-jump distance increased 7% and their standing long-jump distance increased 2%.

     And the people in the control group (the ones that didn't stretch) saw no improvements in any of these areas.

Specially Designed Stretching Can Significantly Boost Muscle Strength

Researchers from Brigham Young University in Hawaii conducted a similarly impressive study.  They had male and female students follow a 10-week stretching protocol consisting of 15 different static stretches for the legs, held for 15 seconds each and performed 3 times a week.

     The scientists tested subjects' flexibility as well as their one-rep-max (1RM) strength and muscle endurance (how many reps they could complete with 60% 1RM) on the leg extension and leg curl.  The researchers reported that not only did test subjects' flexibility significantly increase but so did their 1RM and muscle endurance on both leg exercises.

     "This study shows that a consistent stretching program in the absence of any strength training can significantly increase muscle strength on its own."
